Making features stand out with location photography
One of the great things about working on a historical magazine like Your Family Tree is the gorgeous vintage photography that is available to use in features and on covers. This can be a hindrance as well as a help though and, sometimes, you just have to illustrate a layout differently.
This money-saving article is a regular annual feature because there are always new and exciting websites/archives that you can use to research on a budget. Ancestry and FindmyPast have recently released Apps that allow you to partake in genealogy on the move. In YFT108 we decided that using vintage photography wasn’t going to do the job and we wanted to make the websites and apps within the article stand out. The decision was made to use photography on the go and the final café theme gave the article a different feel and hinted at the modern technology and techniques within.
It’s one of my favourite features as I had to think outside the box. It’s bright, simple, ever so easy on the eye and above all unique. So as you can see – you really can make your designs jump from the page (just by subtly altering the style of photography).
